Incandescent lamp product information

The incandescent lamp is the regular household bulb that is used everyday. This is a device used for emission of light by heating a substance at a high temperature. The incandescent lamp contains solids and gases that produce light when an electric current passes through, which heats them to high temperatures.

The incandescent bulb contains a tungsten filament that is either coiled or stretched and sealed in a bulb filled with a particular gas that neither reacts with the tungsten substance nor the bulb.

The gas within the bulb contains a proportionate combination of Argon and Nitrogen that determines the brightness within the bulb. Electric current is passed through the filament heating up the filament at high temperatures of 3000 degrees Celsius making the filament glow and emit light.

The first person to display the characteristics of incandescence was Sir Humphrey Davy who passed electric current by using electricity to heat platinum strips in open air. Frederick de Moleyns, a French inventor was awarded the incandescent lamp’s patent for the first time in history.

This lamp was used for heating powdered charcoal between 2 platinum wires for producing light. Later the incandescent lamp became a regular source of lighting after the vacuum pumps were invented. In the year 1878 the invention of the modern light bulb by the British scientist Sir Joseph Wilson Swan made use of carbon filaments in glass bulbs that were vacuumed.

The invention of the incandescent bulb is more pronounced with the name of the American inventor Thomas Edison who developed the electrical components for the prevalent use of the incandescent lamp. Ever since the bulb has undergone various changes

There was a very significant change introduced when tungsten filaments known for their highest melting point were used in the incandescent lamps. The credit for making tungsten a pliable source without any damages goes to William David Coolidge. Later there were more improvements such as the use of coiled filaments and inert gas in the bulbs that has increased the bulb’s efficiency levels.

Those bulbs with hydrofluoric acid for coating the inside gave softer lights than the coated ones. Other than the common bulbs there are other varieties of incandescent lamps available. One such lamp is the carbon-arc lamp used for projection of motion pictures and spotlights.

This incandescent lamp uses 2 carbon electrodes for heating which have a high powered electric arc running in between and ionized gases present in the bulb. Another incandescent lamp which is non-electric in nature is the gas-mantle lamp that heats the metal oxides’ network till it reaches the glowing point.

Limelight is another good example of the non-electric incandescent lamp which was used mostly for lighting in theaters. This form of lighting uses calcium oxide to burn in a fuel which has a combination of hydrogen and oxygen.

The once widely used incandescent lamp which enjoyed the single status of being the sole provider of light is being replaced by other lamps for reasons such as polluting the environment and raising the risk of human existence on the planet.

The incandescent lamps have found to be the cause of loss of energy and money. With constant experimentation eco-friendly bulbs such as the compact fluorescent bulbs have taken precedence over the incandescent bulbs due to their energy efficiency factors.

A lot of energy gets wasted when you use the incandescent lamp and a void is being felt due to excessive and irreplaceable use of the resources which is leading our lives towards a perilous existence.
