Fluorescent lighting is one of the most popular types of lighting sources in the world. This type of light is seen in homes, businesses, schools, and more. There is truly no limit to where fluorescent lighting can be used, which is hwy it is so common. While many consider the use of a ballast to be an inconvenience or one more thing to fail in the lighting system, fluorescent lighting is also considered more favorable by many because it is more efficient at converting electrical power into light. Because of this, fluorescent lighting is one of the most economical ways to produce beneficial amounts of light to a given area. A lot of people don't consider fluorescent lighting because it is more costly when you get started, but the more efficient use of power more than makes up for the higher start up cost. When you compare fluorescent lighting to incandescent lighting you will find that they are able to provide the same amount of light as the incandescent bulbs but they last longer and they use less power. Of course, on the down side of this the fluorescent lighting is also bigger and bulkier, is a more involved lighting system, and is also more expensive. Consumers really do have to weigh the pros and cons when considering fluorescent lighting.

Fluorescent lighting has been around for quite a long time, in fact it was first developed in the 18th century, though it was not made available for purchase until much later. While the lighting option did take some time to put together in a marketable package, today it could not be any more relevant. The great thing about fluorescent lighting is that the bulbs are now offered in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and wattages. The one type of fluorescent bulb that has really taken off in the last few years is the compact fluorescent light bulb, also known as a CF bulb. These are very popular because they screw into lamps and fixtures that were made to use incandescent bulbs, but they use a lot less energy and have a much longer lifespan.

Fluorescent lighting is generally seen in areas such as garages, basements, kitchens, and even hallways in the residential sector and it is usually limited to these areas because fluorescent lighting is more costly and not something that is possible in every room due to the cost. Of course, in the commercial sector fluorescent lighting is very common despite the high cost. The reason for this is that commercial minded consumers know that these bulbs are much more energy efficient in addition to having a longer life, so there will not need to be continuous replacement of the bulbs.

Because of the energy efficiency, more and more people are switching to the compact fluorescent light bulbs. In fact, in some areas there are actually tax incentives that have been created to encourage people to begin using fluorescent bulbs instead of incandescent. There are many governments that are flirting with the idea of banning incandescent bulbs to help save on energy. One such government is the government of Finland, which hopes to do away with the use of incandescent bulbs by the year 2012 and Australia wants to ban them by the year 2010.

There are many pros and cons associated with fluorescent lighting. Of the pros we know about energy efficiency, but there is also the longer life, lower luminosity, and lower heat associated with these lights. Cons include higher cost, the use of mercury and complicated disposal, and the use of ballasts.
