The great thing is that there are many different types of dimmers on the market today. Many of them just have the traditional round dial type switch that can be turned one way to slowly turn the light up and the other way to slowly turn the light down. The dimmer switch is generally very easy to install, regardless of the type that you choose for your home or any given room.

We all know that a light dimmer serves to control the amount of light that is put out by any given fixture, but how does it work? This is a question that many people ask and though it must seem like it is very complicated, a light dimmer actually works in a very straight forward way. The way that the light dimmer works is that when you turn the light down the mechanism is actually cutting out parts of the AC voltage that would normally power the light. The result is that only a part of the waveform that usually passes to the light fixture is able to do so. The more the waveform is reduced the dimmer the light will be.

Most of the light dimmer offerings on the market today use a Triac or Thyristor as its power control device. Both the Triac and the Thyristor are semiconductors that do not operate all that differently than transistors. Interestingly, the Thryistor is a uni-directional unit, which means that you will need two of them since the AC power can flow in both directions. In a Triac unit you only need one since it is a bi-directional device. Of course, the Triac of the Thyristor are seen in the more basic light dimmer options, but there are also digital dimmers that use a switching direct from a microprocessor. More and more manufacturers are using the microprocessor because they are more reliable, they operate much more quietly, the controls are smaller, and they also have a lower cost associated with them.

When the light dimmer was first introduced it was generally only seen in one variety and that was the very large wheel type switch that took up a lot of space on the wall, could be very noisy, and could even be warm to the touch. Toda the light dimmer offerings are generally a lot smaller, much more sleek in design, and are often a simple touch pad or button that can be pressed until the right lighting effect is reached. The light dimmers of today are either on or off, which means they don't get very hot and they are more reliable.

There are many different types of light dimmer options on the market today. One of the most obvious advantages is that you can create the mood lighting that you want for any given time. It is also convenient in many cases as there are often timers associated with the switches, so they turn on at a specific time to a specific brightness. Other people like the light dimmer because it allows for them to save energy. It has been found that when you use a light dimmer that you can save energy because you don't need to have full access to the brightness at all times. Instead, you can dim the light by 10% and not notice any difference, yet you are saving money.
