LED lamp product information

The light emitting diode (LED) is a tiny solid-state globe that produces light without a filament. The LED lamp looks like a conventional lamp but uses many LED globes attached to a circuit board to produce the same brightness. The LED has been around for nearly fifty years, but it is only recently that manufacturers have started making lamps using LEDs. There are many advantages to using them instead of incandescent globes. LEDs are more efficient and require much less power, and they last longer because they produce little heat and do not burn out. LED lamps are increasingly being used in automotive lights, traffic lights, navigation lights, flashlights, and many other types of lighting.

The LED is a semiconductor inside a protective plastic case, much like the computer chip and solar cell except that the LED's case allows light to escape. Light is produced when electrons in the semiconductor lose energy as they change location. The lost energy is released as light, and the light color depends on the amount of energy lost. Lower energies produce colors towards the red end of the visible light spectrum while higher energies produce colors towards the blue end. The LED has two terminals, one shorter than the other to indicate polarity. The short terminal is the cathode and the long terminal is the anode.

The LED behaves like any other diode, with very high resistance in one direction and almost no resistance in the other direction. The LED is essentially a short circuit when current flows through it, so there needs to be a resistor or other load placed between it and the power supply, to prevent it from being ruined by too much current. A circuit board is used inside each LED lamp to connect the LEDs together and also to connect them with a resistive load and the terminals. Externally, the LED lamp is similar to a regular lamp and has one of the many standard socket fittings. They are rated for one of the standard light globe voltages and do not require any additional equipment, like ballasts.

The LED lamp is relatively new but has quickly been adopted for many traditional lighting tasks. They can be identified by their distinctive concentric rings, each one containing many LEDs. They are used in automotive headlights, taillights, and interior lights. Security cameras sometimes use LED lamps to provide extra lighting at night. They are being used in navigational lights for boats and aircraft, and used in other critical roles which require long life. Some flashlights use LED lamps to extend their short battery life, since they are more energy efficient that other lamps.

The widespread use of the LED lamp is currently limited by their high cost. This is despite them being more efficient, cheaper to run, and lasting longer than incandescent globes. They will remain a niche product for the near future until their cost is reduced through increased production. Governments and businesses are more likely to use LED lamps than households because they can more easily absorb the extra cost, and they gain larger savings by replacing many more globes. Traffic lights were one of they first large scale uses of LED lamps because failed globes can cause accidents and traffic delays, require a crew of workers to replace, and they do not need to as bright as streetlights.

The LED is one of the most important inventions of the twentieth century, and it is clear even now that the LED lamp will be a major source of lighting well into the future. There is also no obvious successor to the LED currently in development. While they have many advantages, the LED lamp is not a perfect replacement for all lamps. Some high-intensity lamps may never be replaced by them, simply because they would be too large and expensive to be practical.
