The development of an incandescent bulb which would be long lasting was Thomas Edison's brainstorm. He was the first person to conceive the idea of an electric bulb for the purpose of lighting up homes that would be safe, inexpensive and practical.

All about the incandescent bulb
An incandescent light bulb uses a thin filament that is made of tungsten to allow the passage of electricity. When electricity flows through the filament it gets heated till it becomes hot and white in colour. The whiteness that is produced is the light that is generated.

The incandescent bulb was introduced in 1900's as a replacement of the Gas and Carbon Arc lighting. These bulbs were used widely for lighting homes, street lamps, commercial and industrial businesses. Due to its prevalent use and mass production the incandescent bulb became affordable but with shorter lifespan and production of low lumens with each watt.

The incandescent bulb was mainly used by the lighting industry till the need for high quality and improved efficiency was fulfilled by the High Intensity Discharge lamps which are bulbs with mercury vapors and higher energy efficiency.

With the light simultaneously a lot of heat is also produced which is considered to be a wastage. Now attempts are being made to use this energy productively by using the fluorescent lamps that do not use tungsten for producing light.

The future of the incandescent bulb

The power crisis that the entire world is facing today is due to the use of the incandescent bulb. The amount of energy that is wasted in lighting up the incandescent bulbs is the sole cause of shortage of energy which foretells a bleak future for the future generation. Thus the use of incandescent bulbs should be completely stopped to avoid further damage.

The electrical energy that is produced for your consumption is due to the production of the non-renewable products like coal and gas. These materials are totally non-renewable and would be exhausted if there are no efforts to replenish these sources or replace them with some other material. Compared to the incandescent bulbs the CFL bulbs last ten times longer and is inexpensive along with being convenient. These CFL bulbs generate less heat which is about 75% less.

How can you help save the waste of energy and conserve the environment?
You can stop using the incandescent bulb by replacing it with the CFL bulbs at home. An incandescent bulb usually produces twelve to fifteen lumens per watt whereas the CFL or Compact fluorescent lamps produce sixty lumens per watt which gives four times better output. No doubt your household appliances also eat up into your energy but you tend to consume 25% of the electricity for your lighting purposes.
