Light fixtures product information
The light fixture is defined the globes, sockets, wires, housing, supports, brackets, shades, and decorative elements that make up the light source. All these pieces can be arranged into many different designs, so choosing a light fixture can be a challenging task. It helps to know a little bit about the different types available and where they are most commonly used. Pendant lights, recessed lights, and portable lights are commonly used for rooms and hallways. There are also specialized types such as track lighting, which is useful when the position of the lights need to be changed often. Outdoor lighting allows gardens and pool areas to be used at night but requires specially designed lights that can withstand the elements.
Pendant lights can be as simple as a socket hanging from a wire, or as intricate as a crystal chandelier. Most pendant lights use a simple shade to direct the light down and outwards, and also to cover up the unattractive light sockets. Most pendant lights are difficult to adjust and need to be rewired to change their length. Changing the light pattern is more easily done by switching the globe or shade. Reflector globes gives a more focused spot, while a opaque globes spreads the light more evenly around the room.
Recessed lights, also called downlights, have their housing placed inside structural cavities, with the bezel holding the trim and lens flush against the surface. Pool lights are are a common example of recessed lighting. Reflector globes are often used with recessed lighting because they focus most of the light out the narrow opening. Care must be taken that no material inside the cavity comes into contact with the light housing which may be hot enough to start a fire.
The portable or free-standing light fixture has a base, stem, and shade. Table lamps are used to highlight small objects, like figurines and framed photos, as well as providing light for reading and writing. Electric light candelabras make an attractive addition to a dining table, and lava lamps look great on bedside tables. Long stem lamps with upturned shades can be placed in the corners of a room to cast light onto dark walls and the ceiling to make the room appear larger.
Track lighting is unique because the support structure provides power to the lights instead of wires. The tracks can be mounted anywhere, and several spotlights positioned along them facing any direction. This arrangement makes track lighting one of the most adjustable light fixtures, and it is often found in stores and galleries that frequently change their lighting to suit different displays. Low voltage models are available if there are any safety concerns. Cable lighting is a simple form of track lighting which has the spotlights hanging from bare wires.
Outdoor lighting refers to any light fixture that is designed to withstand the elements. It needs to be weatherproof, corrosion resistant, and tolerate hot summers and freezing winters. Lights made of plastic also needs to be resistant to the sun's ultraviolet light, otherwise they will quickly degrade and break apart. Lanterns are a popular choice for lighting doorways, patios, gazebos, and gates. Garden lights are great for lining the edges of paths and garden beds, and spotlights can be used to highlight trees, fountains, and statues. Security lights are used for driveways to provide safety and security at night, and come with motion and light sensors that makes them fully automated. There is also a large range of solar-powered garden lights that cost nothing to run and can be installed without damaging gardens or paths.
Light fixtures are available in many different styles, but some types are more limited than others because of the materials they must use. Outdoor lighting often has a traditional or modern design which looks good when made from metal, plastic, and glass. Indoor lighting uses a greater range of materials and there are more styles to choose from.
