Morse code used to be one of the primary means of communication for amateur radio operators, military personnel, and radio communicators. If an air traffic controller's radio system went offline, he could still use the signal lamp to signal incoming and outgoing pilots about safety conditions and give instructions using a very simple set of signals.

While the signal lamp was very useful for over a century, it has been replaced by more modern methods of communication. Military personnel use sophisticated digital equipment and communications devices to exchange information with officers all over the world. Digital communication has made it possible for military personnel to communicate with other officers located halfway around the world, with excellent clarity and accuracy. Air traffic controllers usually use radio communication, with the signal lamp acting as a last resort for when radio communication is completely unavailable. While the signal lamp made an excellent spotlight for navy officers in the nineteenth century, it has been replaced by newer spotlights that offer more illumination.

The signal lamp was an important contribution to communication in the late nineteenth century. Its use allowed military personnel the opportunity to communicate with each other without fear of having radio signals or telegraphs intercepted by enemy officers. Although its use has been mostly replaced with digital communication tools, the signal lamp still holds a special place in history.
