Emergency lighting product information

Emergency lighting, as the name suggests involves a lighting device which is backed by a battery and enabled automatically in case of a power failure or a fire. Basically the emergency lighting refers to emergency lights that come on when there is sudden shortage of power supply. Hence they are backed by either a battery or a generator system which works for the provision of lights whilst a blackout.

In the earlier times simple incandescent light bulbs were used during a power failure in order to provide just enough light for performing the regular activities or evacuating a building in case of an emergency. But with the passage of time the significance of an enduring and bright light was realized and focus was laid on building emergency lighting that would provide bright lights and illuminate a larger area. For this purpose halogen lights are also used for the provision of a bright light, which in some ways is much similar to the light generated by the automobiles headlights.

The history of the emergency lighting can be dated back to the times when the battery backup systems used to be bigger than the lights which were used for the provision of power. The battery backup systems were mostly composed up of lead acid batteries which were capable of storing 120-volt charges. Hence owing to both the size and the weight of these units they were quite expensive, which made them quite rare and not as common as they are today. But with the advent of the technology and the development of bulbs that require less voltage to light up, the size and the weight of the batteries declined, leading to a reduction in cost and subsequently its common availability.

As far as the modern emergency lighting is concerned it is set up in almost all kinds of buildings imaginable ranging from the commercial buildings to the residential. The lights are made up of one or several incandescent bulbs or a bunch of light-emitting diodes. They are also commonly known as the LED and are high intensity. The modern lighting incorporates some type of a reflector which centers on the intensification of the light that is produced, and comes in the form of either a plastic covering or as an object that is located just behind the actual light source. The voltage required for the average modern emergency lighting systems is around 6-12 volts as opposed to the 120 volts of the old times, leading to a considerable reduction of load on the circuit that is connected with the emergency lighting. Emergency lighting systems vary. Some turn off automatically after they have been activated whereas some require to be shut off manually. In the later, the emergency lights remain lit even after the original power supply has been re-established. The reset button needs to be pressed.

In case of an environmental catastrophe say an earthquake, snowfall or storm the disruption in the power supply can occur for a prolonged time period. In such a situation the emergency lighting comes in handy not only for usage in commercial buildings such as the offices and hospitals but also the residential buildings in order to carry on with the daily activities. They also operate as a safety measure against the power outages in order for the people to locate their way out of the respective buildings. Further still they are sometimes also used in combination with the exit sign boards. Today the emergency lights are installed in all new buildings and several older ones are also installing them.
